Technology is something that has, obviously, become interwoven into our lives. Isn’t it the most naked feeling when you reach in your pocket/purse and can’t find your phone and remember you left it at home?
I got the idea to do a quick post about technology when I was sitting at my desk and my phone beeped at me. The notification was that one of the applications that I had downloaded in the few months that I had, and specifically it was telling me there was an update to the program. The program happened to be a Bible app that I had……so imagine my surprise/laughter when my screen says they have found an update to the Bible. Of course, this was just a tweak to the application, but I really thought this was hilarious (I was picturing God getting a page on his beeper saying that Mark has just finished Mark….).
Technology has changed the way we plan our time, making us much more efficient. Remember the days when you used to have a binder full of MapQuest (who uses MapQuest any more with Google Maps anyway?) for a weekend vacation to a new city. Anymore I don’t even get the address to plug into my GPS, I depend on my internet capable phone to look up the address then simply click the button that says guide me there. I think it is safe to say that there is no way to navigate the streets of Dallas without a GPS.
Social networking is also a 21st century phenomenon. A couple of Facebook stats for you:
- There are over 500 million active users
- 50% of users log on at least once a day.
- Average user has 130 friends.
- People spend over 700 billion minutes a month on Facebook.
I know so many of these things can be taken in a negative connotation……but I think it is amazing that I can video chat with my family (if my sister can figure out how to un-mute her microphone) who is over 800 miles away and I can check my email address from anywhere in the world. I use near 100,000 minutes/texts a month (it’s possible, try having a long distance fiancé) when my first cell phone, a mere 6 years ago, had 150 minutes a month and texting wasn’t even an option.
As I am posting this I am listening to K-Love, and as I am about to post they just shared a story that Harrisburg University is doing a 1 week social media fast. This could be interesting…….
LOL- "a binder of Mapquest pages"...Anybody remember stopping at a service station to get an actual map? Technology is great and it has changed our lives, for the good, I believe...A stat for you--in 2005 there were 15 billion text sent the whole year on the AT&T network alone..This year the network will carry 600 billion...My only problem with tech. is that the 'art of discussion' is being lost by a generation...Oh well, it had to happen...LOL
